“Lady with Fan” painting by Gustav Klimt was sold for 30 million euros (32 million dollars) in an auction, despite unanswered questions about its subject and previous owner. The Austrian painter’s death prevented him from completing the artwork. For a long time, the painting was thought to be lost, but it was actually hung in a private villa near Vienna for decades. The auction house estimated its value between 30 to 50 million euros. The painting depicts a young woman in a turquoise dress with a pink shawl against a red background, with marble-like skin, pale brown eyes, and dark curly hair. Although the woman featured in the painting is clear, her exact identity as ‘Frau Bluhm’ remains unknown. Adolf and Gustav Bloch-Bauer, wealthy industrialists in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, were likely the subjects’ relatives. Henriette Amalie “Lili” Bloch-Bauer, married to Gustav until 1905, was a patron of the arts. It is speculated that she or Adolf requested the portrait of either their daughter or Margaret, Adolf’s daughter.
